gay cartoon characters
by gilwarrior inhas anyone ever spotted a gay cartoon character?
i firmly believe that peppermint patty in the "peanuts" cartoons was gay.
she was pretty much a tomboy and did you ever notice that patty's friend marcy always called her "sir" even though patty was a girl?

In the cartoon strip "For Better or for Worse" by Lynne Johnson there is a character named Laurence who is openly gay. When she brought him out of the closet, I believe she got some flack from more conservative papers that publish her strip. I think FBFW is fantastic.

Silly Valentines day question for any moms out....
by betweenworlds insilly question for any moms out there with elementary school kids.... due to my dub upbringing i am seriously holiday impaired.
i know this question is going to sound really stupid, but here 'goes anyhow .
you know when the little kids in elementary school pass out valentines to each other?

Yes!!!!! Something finally that I know about. lol I have ALWAYS celebrated holidays!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, I agree with what the others say. A valentine for everyone in the class so there are no hurt feelings. The boys do tend to want the manly ones and if you read them they are more about friendship than romance. Its kind of funny, as they get older, they will kinda sneak a bit nicer, or more romantic one to someone they "like".
In grade 6, Birdie got 2 very mushy Valentines in the mail from boys with crushes on her. They gave her the usual friend ones at school and the mushy ones at home. It was so funny and she was scarlet and mortified and chucked them in the garbage....... and snuck them out again later.
She is in grade 9 now, and hands out foil wrapped chocolate hearts to all her friends, male and female on Valentines day. She is also preparing a mushy card and gift for her JW boyfriend and she is expecting something back. I sure hope that he comes through, but then again if he doesn't, maybe they will break up. Nope, somehow he gets away with it....sigh....he will give it to her late, then it isn't a Valentines present anymore, right?

My wife's anxiety, guilt
by ashitaka inmy wife has been depressed each time we see our jw friends.
she doesn't want to see them anymore, because it reminds her of what she left behind, and it makes her feel bad.. i've offered to go back to meetings for a while to help her break away.
she never wants to go back, but her guilt and anger make her so uncomfortable around active jw's.....it's really bothering her.. any good books out there on breaking away from controlling organizations, especially concentrating on keeping the friendships but not the allegiance to the organization in question?

Hi Ashi,
Ginny's suggestions are marvelous. During a difficult time in my life I wrote out my pain in a journal, and it helped. All those books sound great. The biggest help was TIME, and forcing myself to find a new focus. Are you both in a kind of limbo? I have often wanted to start a thread about that...how so many of you are able to leave the JW life, but aren't ready to jump fully into the "world". To enjoy the simple pleasures of the world, like Valentine's day, and birthdays, and Christmas, and having friends whose religion has no bearing on your frriendship. So you leave the positive things in the Borg, and there must be some or so many of you wouldn't have been part of it, yet you don't experience the positive things in the regular world. Do you do the fun stuff yet?
Maybe the healthiest thing would be to leave all the Borg stuff behind you, and go full steam ahead. Walking in both worlds just doesn't work.

My article was published
by RunningMan inmuch to my surprize, i received an e-mail from a webzine this morning, telling me that one of my articles was published.
they must be very hard up for material.. it is on the subject of "the women of the bible".
it outlines some of the gender discrimination of the bible, and highlights a few inconsistancies in some of the bible stories that mention women.. if anyone is interested, it can be found at: http://www.liberator.net/.

Congratulations, Running Man!!!
The Bible and many other religious literatures were written by men, who in turn were a product of their society. It isn't often that ANY social group is going to give up power, and that includes these men.
Add to that, the fundamentalism of some of those who INTERPRET religious writings and you get a range of religious laws up to the extremety of the Taliban.
Excellent article, and congratulations on being a new kind of publisher.
I personally find the JW policy for the treatment of women extremely offensive, and it puzzles me how any woman born and educated in our society allows herself to be submissive . Just my outsiderness showing. -

The mormons vs the jw?
by Nicolas ini saw a report on tv about the church of jesus chrisht of latter day saint and they have a lot in common with the jw.
they go from door to door and as the jw, they believe that they are here to save the world.
do you think that this church will become more popular while the watchtower is losing his popularity?

What all of you say fits in with my memories accurately. I lived in a smaller city with a large Mormon population for about a year while I was in my late teens. I was befriended by a nice Mormon girl, who invited me to many social events. To be honest, I had a good time at most of them, except that everyone else knew each other. They have and extremely active teen social program. What they said at their religious services left me cold, but they had the most beautful music and singing.
In retrospect, I feet that they were drawing me in socially. Once, I was part of the group, then I would have been eased into the religious teaching. It would have been easier to have been sucked in, as they are more mainstream. I think it is far more effective doing it that ways as far as catching converts, compared to the JW way. I wonder if their door to door ministry is any more effective than JWs?. I doubt it.
Our business currently has 3 Mormon employes, who are all terrific. They are well educated, smart, honest and really easy to get along with. They mix well with the other staff and come to Christmas parties and other gatherings.

I was just going to post about how nice it was that the parents are being so flexible. Oops, scratch that. It might be really hard on those kids, and it is great that they have you to talk to about it.
If those parents do toss him out at 18, it is going to make college very difficult. I sure wish all of you strength in what is going to be some really tough years. -
